French President Emmanuel Macron’s popularity ratings recovered slightly in May, a survey showed on Friday, following a series of government concessions aimed at ending the sometimes violent yellow vest movement.

週五一項調查顯示，法國總統埃馬紐埃爾·馬克龍的受歡迎程度在五月份略有回升，因爲此前政府爲了結束頻繁發生的暴力的“黃馬甲運動”做出了一系列讓步。

The government has scrambled to shake off the social crisis, which began as a peaceful protest against planned fuel tax hikes but quickly morphed into a working class rebellion. The 41-year-old’s approval ratings jumped by one point to 26 per cent, a level not seen since last summer, a YouGov poll for the Huffington Post and French television channel CNews found. But Mr Macron’s dissatisfaction rating remains high, with 66 per cent of respondents telling pollsters they hold an “unfavourable” opinion of him. Eight per cent said they were indifferent.

The poll comes as anti-government yellow vest demonstrations recorded their lowest turnout yet on Saturday.

Some 18,900 people took part in the marches nationally, compared with 23,600 a week earlier, according to the Interior Ministry. In Paris, where just three protests had been declared, turnout was 1,460 against 2,600 last week.

In contrast, tens of thousands of labour union and yellow vest protesters had taken to the streets across the country on Wednesday in May Day demonstrations marred by violent clashes between far-left anarchist groups and riot police, especially in Paris.

But the sharp downturn in demonstrator numbers on the 25th consecutive weekend of protests is a huge relief to Mr Macron, who last week outlined a series of policy proposals to address the issues raised by the yellow vests.
