The Snipe Grapples with the Clam
One day, a clam proudly opened its shells to sun itself on the river bank. A snipe passed by the clam and stretched its bill to peck at the clam's flesh.
一天，一隻河蚌得意洋洋地張開殼，在河灘上曬太陽。有一隻鷸鳥，從河蚌身邊走過，就伸出嚎去啄河蚌的肉。
The clam hurriedly closed its shells and tightly grasped the snipe's bill between them. DesPite all its efforts, the snipe could not extricate its bill.
這時候，河蚌急忙把殼合上，緊緊地夾住了鷸鳥的詠。鷸鳥用盡
力氣，也拔不出它的嚎來。
The clam could not get itself free to return to the river either.
河蚌也脫不了身，不能回到河裏去了。
Then the clam and the snipe began to quarrel.
河蚌和鷸鳥就爭吵了起來。
The snipe said angrily:
鷸鳥氣呼呼地說:
"If it doesn't rain for one or two days, there will be no water. And you can't return to the river, then surely you will die anyway."
“一天不下雨，兩天不下雨，沒有了水，你回不了河，總是要死的。”
The clam also said angrily:
鷸河蚌也氣呼呼地說:
"If I don't let go of you for one or two days, you won't be able to pull out your bill. Don't hope that you can live."
“一天不放你，兩天不放你，你的詠拔不出來，也別想活。”
Neither the clam nor the snipe would give in, and they kept on grappling. At this moment, a fisherman came along the riverside with a fishing net. He was very glad to see the snipe and the clam at a deadlock. Without the least effort, he caught them both, put them into his fish basket and carried them home.
河蚌和鷸鳥誰也不讓誰，爭吵個不停。這時候，有個捕魚的人，提着魚網，沿着河邊走來。看見鷸鳥和河蚌相持不下，他非常高興，毫不費力地把它們兩個一齊捉住，塞進魚簍裏，帶回家去了。

Shortly after King Zhao of the State of Yan came to the throne, he went to visit Guo Kui, an able and virtuous scholar, and asked for his advice on how to govern the state and make it strong, and how to avenge his father and wipe off the shame of the state. Guo Kui told him the story of "Buying Bones with 1,000 Pieces of Gold".
燕國國君燕昭王即位後不久，去拜訪賢士郭魄先生，向他請教如何治國圖強，爲先王報仇，爲國雪恥。郭魄給燕昭王講了一個“千金買骨”的故事。
In ancient times, there was a king very fond of horses that could cover 1,000 1i a day. He sent many people, sought many means and spent lots of money to buy such horses. Yet three years had passed, and no such horses were available.
古時候，有一位國君，他非常喜歡千里馬。他派了很多人，想了不少辦法，花了許多錢去買馬。可是，三年過去了，千里馬仍然沒有買到。
One day, a guard volunteered to help and said to the king: "I am willing to buy a thousand-li steed for Your Majesty."
一天，一個衛士自告奮勇，對國君說:“我願意爲大王買馬。”
The king was pleasantly surprised. He asked:"You? Can you make it?"
“你!”國君又驚又喜，“你能行嗎?”
"Your Majesty, you can rest assured," replied the guard.
“請大王放心!”
The king complied with his request and let him go on his mission.
國君答應了他的請求，讓他去了。
The guard sought for the horse wholeheartedly. He spent three months, and after much effort found out the whereabouts of such a horse. But when he hastened there, the horse had already died. Without the least hesitation, he bought the bones of the horse with 500 pieces of gold, and returned to report to the king.
衛士一心一意尋找千里馬，花了三個月的時間，好不容易打聽到了一匹千里馬的下落。但是，等他趕到那兒的時候，這匹千里馬已經死了。衛士毫不猶豫，花了五百金買下了這副千里馬的骨頭，回來報告國君。
On seeing the horse bones the guard had actually bought, the king flew into a rage.
國君一看買回來的竟是馬骨，氣得暴跳如雷，罵道:
"You! What I want is a live horse, but you have bought the bones of a dead horse. What is the use? You have wasted 500 pieces of gold. What punishment do you think you deserve?"
“你!我要的是活馬。可是，你買回來的卻是死馬骨頭，有什麼用?白白糟蹋了五百金，該當何罪?”
The guard replied calmly:
衛士不慌不忙地回答說:
"Your Majesty, this is to let the general public know that Your Majesty is willing to pay a high price for even a dead thousand-li horse, let alone a live one. All the people in the world will know that Your Majesty wishes to buy a thousand-li horse sincerely. Your Majesty, don't be angry. Just wait and the horse you want will come very soon."
“大王，我是爲了讓老百姓知道，大王連死的千里馬也肯花大價錢買，何況活的千里馬呢?天下的人都會知道，大王是真心誠意要買千里馬。大王，您不要生氣，您等着吧!不久，您要的千里馬一定會來的。”
As the guard had expected, the king bought three thousand-li horses within one year.
果然，不出衛士所料，一年不到，國君就買到了三匹千里馬。
六年級英語故事短文：苛政猛於虎Tyranny Is Fiercer than Tigers
In ancient times, at the foot of Mount Tai surrounded by mountains, one often heard of tales of tigers devouring people
古代，在羣山環抱的泰山腳下，常常聽到老虎吃人的事情。
One day, Confucius and his disciples passed by Mount Tai. As they walked along, his disciples talked about what they had heard and seen.
有一天，孔子帶着弟子路過泰山。弟子們一邊走，一邊談論着所見所聞。
Suddenly, they heard someone weeping in the distance. They went over and saw a young woman who, with her head covered with a white kerchief, wore white cotton clothes, trousers, shoes and stockings. She was kneeling in front of a new grave and weeping bitterly. The disciples didn't know what to do. Confucius ordered one of them to go forward and ask:
忽然，聽到遠處傳來哭聲。大家便走了過去，一看原來是一個年輕的婦女，頭上包着白色的頭巾，身上穿着白布衣褲，腳上套着白布鞋襪，正跪在一座新墳前面痛哭。弟子們不知如何是好，孔子叫弟子上前詢問:
"Who has died? Why are you weeping in such sorrow?"
“死了誰?你爲什麼哭得這麼傷心?”
The woman raised her head, wiped her red and swollen eyes, sobbed and answered intermittently:
婦女擡起頭來，擦着紅腫的眼睛，抽泣着斷斷續續地回答:
"In the past, my father-in-law was devoured by a tiger. Later, my husband was devoured by a tiger too. Now my son has also been bitten to death by a tiger."
“從前，我的公公被老虎吃掉了。後來，我的丈夫又被老虎吃掉了。如今，我的兒子也被老虎咬死了。”
Confucius' disciple asked worriedly:
孔子的弟子着急地問道:
"The tiger harmed the lives of three generations of your family. Why didn't you leave this place earlier and move to somewhere else?"
“老虎傷害了你家三代人的性命，你爲什麼不早點兒離開這裏，搬到別處去呢?”
The woman sobbed, saying:
婦女哭着說:
"There are tigers here, but there are no exorbitant taxes, levies or heavy corvee here!" When Confucius heard this, he turned to his disciples and said:
“這裏有老虎，但是沒有苛捐雜稅和繁重的搖役啊!孔子聽到這兒，回過頭來，對弟子們說:
"Remember, tigers devour people, but tyranny is fiercer than tigers!"
“你們記住，老虎吃人，可是苛政比老虎還要兇猛啊!”
