the novice monk who rescued the ants
小和尚還不到受戒年齡，就叫做“沙彌”。
a little monk who is not old enough to get ordained is called a novice monk.
從前有個小沙彌，他跟着一個極有智慧的師父學習佛教。他是一個好學生，恭敬、誠懇、聽話，而且學得很快。
once there was a novice monk who studied buddhism with a very wise teacher. he was a very good student. he was respectful, sincere, and obedient. he learned very quickly.
這個師父很有智慧，能夠預知未來。從一開始他就知道他的小徒弟活不了多久。有一天，他掐算出自己的徒兒只有七天的壽命了，就感到非常難過。
the teacher was so wise that he could foretell the future. the teacher knew from the beginning that his little student could not live very long. one day he counted and realized that the little student had only seven days left to live. he felt very sad.
師父把小沙彌叫來說，“小沙彌啊，你已經很久沒見到你媽媽了。我想你需要時間回家看看你媽媽。八天後再回來吧。”他這麼做是讓小沙彌至少可以死在自己家裏。
the teacher called the novice monk to him. he said, " hey, little novice monk, you haven't seen your mother for a long time. i think you need a vacation. you run on home and visit your mother, and come back eight days from now." he did this so at least the little sami could die in his own parents' home.
小沙彌離開以後，師父想到自己再也不能見到小徒弟了，覺得非常悲傷。
when the little novice monk left, the teacher was very sorry. he thought he would never see his little student again.
八天後，小沙彌回來了!他的師父十分歡喜，但是也很疑惑，他的徒弟看起來氣色很好，一點也不像一個曾瀕臨死亡的人。
eight day Later, who should show up but the little novice monk! his teacher was delighted, but he was also puzzled, because the little student looked wonderful. he didn't look like someone who had been about to die.
最後，師父決定弄個明白。他對小沙彌說：“孩子，我曾經多次預測未來，從未有誤。我讓你回家是因爲你註定要在七天裏死去，但是七天已經過去了。你不但活着，而且看起來很好。死亡的影像已經遠離了你。這是怎麼回事呢?”
finally, the teacher decided to find out what had happened. he told the boy, "son, i have foretold the future many times, and i have never been wrong! let you home because you were doomed to die within seven days, but the seven days have already passed. not only are you still alive, but you look great. the image of death has left you. how did you do it?"
小沙彌聽了以後非常震驚，他不知道如何回答。於是他的師父入定察看，很快就瞭解了事情的經過。
the little novice monk was thunderstruck. he didn't have any idea how to answer his teacher, so the teacher entered the settled state of meditation. before long, he understood.
“孩子，在你回家的路上，你救了一些螞蟻，對嗎?”
"son, on the way home, did you save some ants?"

A man once had four sons who never stopped quarrelling with one another.

The father asked each son in turn to try to break the bundle, but none of them could do it .

Then he untied the string and scattered the sticks.

"Now try,"he said. The boys broke the sticks easily in their hands.

"Do you see what I mean?" asked the father. "If only you stand together no one can hurt you all disagree the whole time and insist on going your separate ways, the first enemy you meet will be able to destroy you.'

Finally he planted the tree in his wood where no one could see it. But without sunlight and goodsoil, the tree soon died.

Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place."What's thedifference?" the farmer said angrily. "If I had planted the tree near the road, strangers wouldhave stolen the fruit.
