Jazz is more than music – it is a universal message of peace, harmonising rhythm and meaning, carrying values significant for every woman and man, providing unique opportunities for mutual understanding, through listening, playing, improvisation. This spirit has inspired musicians, as well as poets, painters and writers all over the world, reminding us that culture is far more than entertainment – culture is a window onto the soul, culture is the shape we give to that which we most cherish.
爵士樂不僅僅是音樂，而是代表着人們對於和平的普遍期盼，韻律與詞句在樂曲中渾然天成，傳達出人人珍視的價值觀。通過聆聽、演奏和即興創作，爵士樂爲人們相互理解搭建起了獨特的橋樑。這種精神爲世界各地的音樂家、詩人、畫家和作家帶來了靈感，同時也提醒着我們，文化不僅是娛樂，更是通往靈魂的一扇窗；在文化這件虛無縹緲的外衣下，我們看到的是自己珍愛的一切。

This is why UNESCO created International Jazz Day.
正因爲如此，教科文組織設立了國際爵士樂日。

Jazz tells of the power of music to build peace and bring together people of all cultures and backgrounds. The history of jazz draws from a great mix of peoples and cultures – from Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean. Jazz gave music to the courage that drove the civil rights movement in the United States, and it continues to provide inspiration to millions of people across the world, seeking freedom, fighting for respect and human dignity.
爵士樂顯示出音樂具有強大的力量，可以建設和平，可以將文化與背景各異的人們聚集起來。一部爵士樂的發展史融會了來自非洲、歐洲和加勒比的多種不同民族和文化。爵士樂讓音樂頓生豪情，奮起推動美國的民權運動，而且時至今日依然在爲世界各地數百萬民衆提供靈感，激勵人們爭取自由、尊重和尊嚴。

This year, International Jazz Day is celebrated in Washington, DC, hometown of the great Duke Ellington, featuring a unique All Star Concert at the White House, hosted by United States President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. After travelling the world, jazz returns home. This kicks off a celebration that will take over hundreds of cities across the globe. Once again, this shows the power of Jazz to bring the world together as one.
今年將在艾靈頓公爵的家鄉華盛頓慶祝國際爵士樂日。屆時，美國總統巴拉克·奧巴馬和第一夫人米歇爾·奧巴馬將在白宮舉辦一場獨一無二的全明星音樂會。爵士樂在走遍世界之後，將榮歸故里。遍及世界各地數百座城市的 慶祝活動也將由此揭開序幕。爵士樂再一次展示出它凝聚世界的力量。
