There was, a man who came to the palace of the State of Chu and gave the guard a kind of medicine for immortality to be presented to the king.
有一個人來到楚國王宮，把一種長生不死的藥交給守衛官，請他敬獻給國王。
As the guard held the medicine in both hands and walked towards the inner palace, he met an archer of the bodyguard. The archer asked him:
守衛官捧着藥朝內宮走去，迎面碰上衛隊的一個弓箭手。弓箭手問他:
"Is what you hold in hands edible?"
“你手裏捧的東西，人可以吃嗎?”
The guard answered: "Of course, it is."
守衛官回答:“人可以吃。”
Upon hearing this, the archer snatched the medicine, stuffed it into his mouth and swallowed it.
弓箭手聽了，一把奪過藥，塞到嘴裏就吞了下去。
The King of Chu was very angry. He ordered to have the archer beheaded.
楚王非常生氣，下令將這個弓箭手斬首。
The archer said: "It is not my fault but the fault of the guard, because he told me `It is edible.' "
弓箭手說:“這不是我的過錯，而是守衛官的過錯，因爲他回答我‘人可以吃。”，
Then he continued: "This is a medicine for immortal life.
又說:“這是不死之藥。
Now I have taken it, but I am going to be killed by Your Majesty.
現在我吃了，反而要被大王處死。
Then, the so-called medicine for immortal life will become `a medicine hastening death', won't it?
那麼，這不死之藥，不就成了‘催死之藥’了嗎?
The man who presented this medicine was trying to deceive Your Majesty."
這是獻藥的人在欺騙大王呀!”
Finally he said: "If today Your Majesty should kill me, an innocent man,
最後說:“今天，如果大王殺了我這個無罪的人，
then people would say: `The King would rather be deceived than believe his own bodyguard.'"
那麼衆人就會說:‘大王寧願被人欺騙，也不願意相信自己的衛士。”
While the King of Chu heard this, he felt that there was something in what the archer said, so he let him go.

Thereupon, they let several old horses lead in front and the army followed behind.

Finally they found their way home.

When the army entered the hills, they ran out of water.
軍隊走進山裏，水沒有了。
Then Xi Peng said: "In winter, the ants stay on the south side of a hill, and in summer, on the north side.
這時限朋說:“螞蟻冬天住在向陽坡，夏天住在背陰坡。
There is sure to be water source under their nest."
螞蟻窩的下面一定有水源。”
Thereupon, the soldiers exerted strenuous efforts to dig the ground.
於是，士兵們奮力挖土。
Sure enough, they found water under the ants' nest.
果然在螞蟻窩的下面挖到了水。
Men of great learning like Guan Zhong and Xi Peng, when coming across difficulties, would also seek help from horses and ants of lower intelligence than human beings to find a way out.

King Zhuang of Chu smiled and answered:"It didn't spread its wings to fly for three years inorder to grow full-fledged.
楚莊王笑了一笑，回答說:“三年不展翅飛翔，是爲了讓羽翼長得更加豐滿;
It didn't cry for three years in order to carefully observe the conditions of the people in theworld.
三年不鳴，是在細心觀察天下的民情。
This bird, once it flies, will soar high into the sky;
這隻鳥，不飛則已，一飛沖天;
once it cries, it will startle the world with a single cry."
不鳴則已，一鳴驚人。”
Another half a year passed before King Zhuang of Chu began to personally administer stateaffairs.
又過了半年，楚莊王開始親自處理政事。
He abolished ten outmoded rules and regulations, issued nine new policies, sentenced fiveministers to death for their evil deeds and promoted six persons with real talents.
他廢除了十項舊的規章制度;頒佈了九項新的政策;處決了五個專幹壞事的大臣;還提拔了六個真正有才能的人。
From then on, the State of Chu became stronger and stronger.
從此，楚國終於強大起來了。
