The thief and his mother

A boy stole a textbook from one of his school fellows, and took it home to his mother。

She didn’t beat him, instead she encouraged him, he next time stole a cloak and brought it to her, when she yet further praised him.

The youth, advanced to man’s estate, continued to steal things of greater value. At last he was taken in the very act, and having his hands bound behind him, was led away to the place of public execution. His mother followed in the crowd and violently beat her breast in sorrow. The young man said, “I wished to say something to my mother in her ear.” She came close to him, when he quickly seized her ear with his teeth and bit it off. The mother called him unnatural child, but he answered, “Ah! If you had beaten me, when I first stole and brought to you that textbook, I should not have come to this, nor have been thus led to a disgraceful death. ”

The Clay Figure and the Wooden Image

When Lord Meng Chang decided to leave his native land the State of Qi to take office in the State of Qin, hundreds of men tried to advise him against going. But he would not listen to them. Then Su Jin wanted to reason with him.

“I have heard all the arguments men can think of,” said Lord Meng Chang. “All that’s lacking is some supernatural reasoning”

“I came here with no purpose of discussing human affairs,” replied Su Jin. “I am asking for an audience to speak of the supernatural.”

Then the lord agreed, and Su Jin told the following story:

“Passing a River on my way here, I heard a clay figure and a wooden image talking together.

The king and His Bow

King Xuan was fond of shooting an arrow and liked to be boasted as a powerful bowman he was, although he could draw no bow heavier than thirty jin, When he showed is bow to his attendants, they pretended to try to draw it, but only bent it to half its full extent.

“This must weigh at least ninety jin!” They all cried. “None but your Majesty could use such a bow.” And at this the prince was pleased.

Though he only used a thirty-jin bow, till the end of his life he believed that it weighed ninety, It was thirty in fact, and ninety only in name, but for the sake of the empty name he sacrificed the truth.

On Fajiu Hill grew a lot of mulberry trees. Among them lived a bird which looked like a crow, but had a colourful head, a white bill and two red claws. Its call sounded like its name: Jingwei. The bird was said to be Emperor Yandi's youngest daughter, who, while playing on the East Sea, had been drowned and never returned. She had turned into Jingwei, and the bird would often carry bits of twigs and stones all the way from the west mountains to the East Sea to fill it up.

It is so hard for a little bird to fill the sea up in such a way! But it is still commendable for its determination and tenacity.

More light

Mr. Timpson noticed his neighbor, Mr. Simpson, searching very hard for something in his front garden.

“Have you lost something, Mr. Simpson?” Asked Mr. Timpson.

“Yes,” replied Mr. Simpson. “I’ve mislaid my spectacles.”

“Oh, dear,” said, Mr. Timpson, “Where did you last see them?”

“In my sitting room. ” said Mr. Simpson.

“In your sitting room?” queried Mr. Timpson. “So why are you looking for them in your garden?”

“Oh,” replied Mr. Simpson. “There’s more light out here!”
