Every minute, someone is setting up an Internet company somewhere, in the world. Each one is searching for the one great idea that could make his web company click in a big way. And they are trying all kinds of tricks to attract people towards their websites. While some websites offer sounds, cartoons and amazing photos on screen to make their sites almost a movie-like experience for the viewers, others provide free downloads and competitions.

A company in California, US, has decided to offer online smells to people who visit its website. That is, if a pizza image comes on screen, your nose will catch the smell of bread and cheese! All you need to do is to connect a device(設備) called “iSmell” with your computer. This smart little device includes some chemicals that can create different kinds of smells.

The company has invented software that changes the chemical composition(成分) of different smells into digital signals(數字信號). An onscreen image, which is programmed with the proper digital signal, will start the “iSmell” device. The device will use the software to change the digital signal again and let go of the correct smell. This device reads the digital smell code(代碼) from the website and creates the proper smell from its store of chemicals. This smell is then made to blow softly in the direction of the user with the support of a small fan.

In order to let go of the correct smell, the company has created a “Scent Registry”, which includes a digital index(數字索引) of thousands of smells. The company plans to allow website developers to make the proper smells in digital code to their games and images. The company is also hoping that Hollywood filmmakers will use the smell technology in their movies.

六、任務型閱讀(本大題共5分,每格1分)

Starting a book club is easy- all you need is to love reading. Here’s how to get yours off to a flying start.

When you set up your book club, the first thing is to get members for your club. They could be friends, family, or those you know through various activities, but they should all love to read. A small group of seven to ten people is usually an ideal size for a book club. Too many make discussions difficult.

Once you have a group, agree on how often you want to meet- usually clubs meet monthly. Pick a date and stick with it. That way, members can easily plan for it. Send out emails a week before the meeting to give people a written reminder. Set meeting time length.

An hour is a good start. Two hours usually does the trick.

Then, you need a good place. Libraries, parks and restaurants- all make good meeting places. For many clubs, homes are the best place as you don’t have to get dressed up, and noisy public places can make talking hard. If members bring a plate of food or a bottle, it can help start conversation.

Please don’t forget the most important thing- the book! Think about the books your club will enjoy. Fiction? Your club can choose books in different ways. You can take turns to recommend books. Let everyone vote upon what book to read. Anyway, make sure to keep it light and fun.

After all this has been decided, your book club is ready. Now, it is time to hold the first meeting. Enjoy your reading.

How to start a book club
