North Korean

A new series of eye-opening portraits explores the age-old disparity in food consumption between the Rich and poor as it holds fast throughout history.

Power Hungry is a collaboration between photographer Henry Hargreaves and food stylist Cailin Levin, and juxtaposes meals enjoyed by the top one per cent under 'authoritarian regimes throughout history' with the meager daily dishes consumed by the lower classes.

“We want people to literally and figuratively sit down and look across a table to see the glaring disparities between the 'haves and have-nots',”Mr Hargreaves states, having photographed staged table-tops from Ancient Egypt and Rome to current-day meals eaten in North Korea, Syria and the U.S.

Rich and poor: North Korean dictator King Jon-Un guzzles down on multi-course meals, deserts and Emmental cheese - known to be his favorite food (right), yet more than a quarter of all North Korean children suffer from chronic malnutrition as a result of sparse food (left).

Modern America

Modern America: Here in the U.S., while the 'food gap' may be less pronounced, one in six of the population live beneath the poverty line according to the latest Census data. Pictured (right) fine food for the wealthy and (left) cheap, unhealthy fare for the poorer population.

Syria

Syria: President Bashar al-Assad and his wife are said to feast on a combination of Western and Middle Eastern delicacies (right), while Assad is 'deliberately starving thousands of people to death,' (left) says photographer Henry Hargreaves.

18th Century France

Let them eat cake: In 18th Century France, before the revolution, an unskilled laborer in 1789 could expect to spend 97per cent of his wages on bread, due to harvest shortages (left). Meanwhile, monarchs dined on delicacies including sugared fruit, champagne and pastries (right).

Ancient Roma

Glutton: As for the ancient Romans, the top one per cent of this historical period are still renowned for their gloriously over-indulgent feasts (right). The everyday Roman man, on the other hand, would have been more accustomed to a diet mostly of millet (left).

Early civilisation

Early civilisation: Ancient Egyptian rulers and monarchs would also have enjoyed a much richer variety of foods (right), whereas poor members of society had to make do with simple bread and vegetables (left).
