Describe a useful thing you borrowed.

You should say:

what you borrowed

who lent it to you and when

what kind of features this thing has

and explain why you think it is useful.

It’s funny you should ask this question as I actually borrowed something very useful just last week, so it’s very fresh in my memory.

I’ve been doing some D.I.Y. in my apartment lately, I’m trying to do it up so that it looks a bit nicer. I wanted to put some new shelves up, but I didn’t have the right equipment, so I asked my friend Jack if I could borrow his electric drill. I had lent him something a few weeks earlier, so he didn’t mind returning the favour.

Even though on the surface it is just a drill it is extremely versatile and has more features than you might expect. It comes with a wide range of attachments for drilling different sized holes or into different types of material. There are also attachments that turn it into a screwdriver or a sander, to sand down wood and give it a smooth edge.

I’m so grateful he lent it to me, it would have been hard work to drill by hand and it saved me loads of time and energy. I put the shelves up in no time and with minimal fuss.

I’ve always wanted to buy an electric drill, but have never gotten round to it. When you don’t need something it’s easy to put off buying it, but then you don’t have it when you do need it!

Describe a time you borrowed something from your friends or family

You should say:

What it was

When you borrowed it

Whom you borrowed it from

What you did with it

And why you borrowed it

Just after finishing my college, I along with two other friends planned to start a small business. It would be 2015, I guess, and I was convinced to be part of this business and borrowed the money from my father. Besides my university, I got serious about our new venture and I had been able to return the money within a year that I took from my father as a loan. When I returned the money to my father, he seemed surprised and I explained to him how our interior design house is flourishing day by day. He told me that he was quite astonished that our little venture eventually saw the light of success.

I thanked him for the money and explained how we worked together to make it a success. I also showed my gratitude and mentioned that without his money, I could not have been a part of this business.

In numerous times, I borrowed books, laptops, music player, money, CDs and so on from my friends and relatives but the two thousand dollars I took from my father was something quite different and I am lucky that I decided to borrow it from my father for a good reason.

Why do some people like to borrow things instead of buying them?

What would you do if people don t return the money they borrowed from you?

Why are people embarrassed when they borrow money from others?

How often you borrow something from others?

Borrowing is not in my nature but when I am in extreme need of something and I cannot manage alone getting that, I borrow. But it is a rare event for me and my surrounding people that I am borrowing something from them. However, I do not bother in lending.

In which situation people usually borrow things?

When people have nothing to do with any specific issue, they are to borrow from others. For instance, you are standing in a bus queue to get the ticket for returning your home and suddenly realised that someone took your wallet (I mean you are experiencing a pickpocket) but you have to go home, what will you do? This is an emergency for you. The first thing you will do is that you will look for any familiar people who can help you in that situation by paying your ticket fare. In such a situation, you will not mind in borrowing and also will return the favour in the next day or when it is possible.

Is it good to borrow apart from the emergency situations?

If you make it a habit of borrowing things in every situation it will be considered as a bad habit. Moreover, it will reduce your credibility and a help building a negative image of you among your surrounding people. You can borrow anything you need if it is an emergency for you. Besides, the people will extend their helping hand towards you without any condition or second thought when they will realise that truly you are in danger. But if you abuse their generosity, at the end of the day you will get no help from any of them. In this case, you can recall the moral story of the cowboy and tiger.

Is it okay to borrow money from neighbours?

You can take anything if you truly need them. It may be money, it may be any favour or even it may be any sort of physical and mental support. But it should be necessary and you need to be unable right that moment to gather the things you are borrowing. You can borrow money from your neighbours too but you need to be honest in this case. You are to return the money within the promised returning time. If you miss the deadline, the neighbour may not say you something due to courtesy but you may not get any further help from him/ her in future.

What problems can occur while collecting return money from people?

Usually, people love to forget the favours. Many people do not care about the favours once they receive those in their emergencies. As a result, they ignore to acknowledge the favours and do not refund them and even if they return, the break several deadlines. It mostly happens for money. If you loan someone an amount of money, you will never get that back in time. It happens everywhere. The beneficiaries start showing different excuses for the return. You are to run after them to collect the money and they, in fact, do not care about the importance of your favour. These are the common problems for lending money and getting that back.

Why sometimes it is difficult to ask somebody to return the money they borrowed?

Sometimes people cannot ask the money that was borrowed to someone mostly for the interpersonal relationship. Sometimes the relationships are so warm that the borrower does not return the money in time and the person who offered cannot also ask for that. It becomes difficult for him/ her to ask the money. It may also happen that the borrower is still in distress and thus the loan provider cannot ask to return the money. Besides, it may also happen that the loan provider has become irritated by running after the borrower, and in that case, it becomes difficult as well to ask for the money return.

When you go into the speaking test, the examiner grades you in four areas:

FC--Fluency & coherence

GA--Grammar Range & Accuracy

LR--Lexical Resource

PR--Pronunciation

Now to be honest every examiner knows what the strong and weak areas are for Chinese students. They all know that LR, which we can also call vocabulary is generally their strong point and FC and PR are generally the weaker. That does not mean that all students will have the same problems. The average IELTS score for Chinese students is 5.5.

The profile usually breaks down like this. Examiners called this a “jagged profile” because on a graph it looks like a jagged line。

FC 5 GA 6 PR 5 LR 6

If we take an average of these four scores we can see that is 5.5 score. This means that any strategy you use for passing the IELTS test should concentrate on FC and PR more than GA and LR. I am not saying that you should forget about GA and LR completely, just focus on the typical weak points。

In the next few parts I will take a look at each area and discuss how you can increase your scores by looking at what examiners want. On the next page you can see a checklist of basic questions that you can ask yourself during the exam. If you can manage to pay attention to all of these points, then you are going to succeed on the exam。

A point that I want to remind you of, is that it is always your weak points that will pull you down, so remember to maintain your strong points, but really focus on your weak points so that everything evens out。
