When you "burn a bridge" you don't really set fire to anything.

當你“burn a bridge”並不意味着真的放火燒了什麼東西。

But you are doing something dangerous.

而是指你做了一些危險的事情。

During wartime, soldiers commonly burned bridges to cut their enemies off from supplies.

在戰爭時期,士兵通常會燒掉橋樑以阻斷敵人的物資供應。

But burning bridges also meant the soldiers could not retreat.

但“burn a bridge”也指士兵沒有了退路。

So, when you burn a bridge, you cut off contact with people or opportunities you might need later.

所以當你“burn a bridge”就意味着你跟他人或者機會斷絕關係。
